FAIRNESS IS OVERRATED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was invited by an intentional community to facilitate a meeting to help them talk about an issue they had been stuck on for two years. There was a proposal to build a common house for the whole community to use yet they couldn\u2019t agree on the logistics of paying for it and building it. Their disagreements had prevented them from moving forward for so long. There was tension between the members most of the meeting and we spent the majority of the time listening to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Near the end, I finally said, \u201cSince you already know the amount of money and time you need to build this, let\u2019s figure out what you already have available and then look at any gaps between what you have and what you need. We will do this anonymously and the only rule is you can only write down what you will give to this project from a place of joy. If you don\u2019t want to give any money, then write down $0, if you will give $20,000 then write that down. If you don\u2019t want to spend any time helping with the labor, then write down 0 hours, or if you want to give 2 months of work at 40 hours a week then write that down. If you want to cook meals for the workers, watch children so parents can work, sing to the workers, draw up the blueprints, then write that down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we collected the slips we were all shocked to find out they had more than 100% of what they needed (funds, labor, food, etc). When they gave from joy, they all had different gifts to contribute. Where they had been stuck for years was the idea that each household had to give the same amount of money, the same number of hours of labor, etc. They had tried to be \u201cfair\u201d by making everything the same, yet by letting different families give differently according to their gifts\/time\/resources, it all worked out and the community house was built that coming summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
