In early 2020, violence broke out in New Delhi. Arson, stabbings, stone-throwing, 53 dead, more than 200 injured, stemming from conflicts surrounding India\u2019s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) [1]. I signed up as a relief worker. One day, while my team was trying to rebuild a slum that had been burned down, the neighbors of the affected people showed up threatening my team and the residents of the slums with violence. I received an SOS call, so I went down to see what I could do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I first de-escalated the conflict by standing between the two groups and practicing some Screaming in Giraffe, where I raised my voice to be heard and used only Feelings and Needs words, [trusting that the threatening crowd and I were all human and that at some fundamental levels we are the same]. I reassured the neighbors that we wanted to take them into account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that, a teammate and I walked down to the neighbors, who surrounded us on the street. For about 25 minutes, all I was able to offer was empathic listening. I used the basic Nonviolent Communication (NVC) tools I’d been taught years ago, reflecting and paraphrasing, and offering feelings and needs guesses. At a certain moment, I caught the eye of the person who was speaking the loudest and I asked, “Well, are you really IRRITATED?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He paused. This seemed to meet him where he was. He relaxed and said, “Yes… yes I am very irritated!”. His personal relief of being heard seemed to ripple through the crowd, and the situation lost its charge. About 20 minutes after that, they were asking us to come home and have tea and listen to their concerns more. I am forever grateful to NVC’s simple but very powerful and doable tools that make it possible to connect across differences, even when I don’t agree with people, even when I am scared, and when the stakes are very high.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
